For many months, there has been a saga called “Wojciech Szczęsny's future”. It was clear that despite his still very good form, Juventus did not see him in their future plans. The signing of Michele Di Gregorio from Monza was such a clear signal that it probably could not be clearer. The Pole was linked with many clubs. He had one foot in Saudi Arabia, but in the end nothing came of it. Then came Monza, Fiorentina, Chelsea, and even a return to Arsenal.
Wojciech Szczęsny did it his way and put an end to all discussions
And then, on Tuesday afternoon, August 27, our goalkeeper decided to put an end to all speculations and reports once and for all. The Pole decided that although he could still defend at a high level, his heart was pulling him in a different direction and his career was over. Szczęsny decided to devote himself to his family, and the last match he played will forever be the clash between Poland and Austria (1:3) at Euro 2024.
The decision caused quite a shock, although not necessarily such a big surprise. It was known that whatever Szczęsny did, he would do it in his own style and on his own terms. Nevertheless, there was no shortage of comments, both among internet users and experts. The former coach of the Polish national team, Adam Nawałka, also added his two cents to the discussion. Although Szczęsny may not remember his tenure too fondly, because at Euro 2016 he suffered an injury in the first match, and at the 2018 World Cup he made a big mistake in the match against Senegal (2018), the coach did not spare him praise in in an interview with the WP SportoweFakty portal.
Adam Nawałka full of praise for Szczęsny
– He must have thought this decision through well, since he made it, and we have to respect that. It's certainly a huge loss for the national team. Wojtek has been in excellent form recently. He's one of the best goalkeepers in the world. I'm glad I could work with players like him. A phenomenal goalkeeper and an intelligent guy who has very interesting observations – said Nawałka.
Certainly, another discussion will now begin about who should become the new number 1 in the Polish goal. The experienced and reliable Łukasz Skorupski in the squad? The younger, on-the-rise Marcin Bułka? Maybe someone else? Nawałka also touched on this aspect.
– We have several goalkeepers with huge potential. Łukasz Skorupski, Marcin Bułka and Kamil Grabara are definitely of international level. However, it will be difficult to replace Wojtek one-on-one. After his departure, there will be fierce competition for a place between the posts. I have already mentioned the great potential of the successors, but they still need to prove their form on the pitch – said the former coach.
This decision will be up to Michał Probierz. Who will he choose? We will find out soon, as the Polish national team will play the first two Nations League matches in September. On Thursday, September 5 in Glasgow against Scotland and on Sunday, September 8 in Osijek against Croatia. The coach has already announced the list of those called up.
