This is what Polish science looked like in Czarnek’s times. “There is a clear pauperization of the academic community”

Before the elections, Minister Przemysław Czarnek hands out cardboard checks to universities and distributes points for scientific publications under new rules. He wants to change the rules for accepting grants to allocate them to “discovering the truth.”

The Minister of Education and Science is to distribute checks to universities in the coming days. For a total of PLN 300 million. For now, on cardboard. – We are certainly currently observing a clear decline in expenditure on higher education and a clear pauperization of the academic community – says Aneta Trojanowska, vice-president of the Council of Higher Education and Science of the Polish Teachers’ Union. The National Science Center also needs funding for distributing grants to scientists, which – despite protests – Minister Czarnek would like to, if not liquidate, at least thoroughly reform, so that the money could be “spent on discovering the truth”. – The research that will be conducted will be conducted on topics that seem to be convenient for the authorities, and if they seem to be convenient for the authorities, they are not necessarily free – warns Dr. Hab. Magdalena Musiał-Karg, vice-dean for research and development at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań.

Questions about the quality of education during the government of Minister CzarnekTVN24

“Dramatic, destructive”

He showed how much the minister understands “truth” by attacking prof. Barbara Engelking from the Center for Holocaust Research at the Polish Academy of Sciences. He attacked her for the conclusions from her research on the role of some Poles during the Holocaust. – I will not finance on a larger scale an institute that maintains these kinds of people who simply insult Poles – Czarnek said on TVP. – It is very important to be able to maintain the full autonomy of the university, the university as an oasis of freedom of speech and exchange of views – emphasizes Dr. Bianka Siwińska, president of the “Perspektywy” Educational Foundation, editor-in-chief of the “Perspektywy” educational magazine. – More and more often, people from universities ask whether this is my place and these people start to leave. This is something that is dramatic, destructive. It not only affects universities, but in fact a little later it will affect what the economy and society are like – says Dr. Hab. Stanisław Mazur, rector of the University of Economics in Krakow.

Certainly, Minister Czarnek will not change the points for publications in scientific journals, because he has equated those known all over the world with Polish, niche, but Catholic ones. For example, points for publications in “The Lancet”, which is important for doctors, are worth the same as points for publications in “Studia z Prawa Wyznaniowego” published by KUL, the university where Czarnek lectures. – It cannot be denied that such a change in the prioritization of publications by Polish scientists will result in a smaller role for Polish science. Paradoxically, this is a very anti-patriotic movement – says Professor Dariusz Jemielniak, Kozminski University, vice-president of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

There is no university without students. Among them there may be future geniuses, but many have to give up their studies because there are no places for them in the dorms and they cannot afford to rent an apartment.
