“Tornado” in Kiel, Germany. They are injured. The storm caused a lot of damage

Kiel, Germany. On Wednesday evening, a water tornado appeared in the village. Some meteorologists say a tornado has formed. The violent weather surprised, among others, a group of rowers who worked in the port. Several people were injured, some are described as severe.

At the waterfront in Kiel on Wednesday around 6 p.m. a storm, also known as a water tornado, pushed several people into the Baltic Sea. A spokesman for the local police, quoted by the daily Die Welt’s website, said seven of those who were on the waterfront were injured.

Witness accounts

The phenomenon surprised, among others, a group of rowers who happened to be in the inner part of the port. They tried to fasten two boats to the wharf. According to the spokesman of the fire brigade – they fell into the water. Some were also hit by wind-blown objects.

Emergency services provided medical care to the injured, including four people whose injuries were classified as serious. The injured were transported to nearby hospitals. The rowers’ rescue operation lasted about two hours, and about 60 people worked there.

– A lot of things just flown. This [wichura – przyp. red.] it hit us all very hard – said an employee of one of the port pubs.

– I took refuge in my vehicle and hoped that everything would end well. I have never experienced anything like this before. Such things are usually only seen on TV – said one of the truck drivers who happened to be in Kiel.

The severe weather phenomenon in Kiel “looked like a tornado”

“It boiled, a strong blast knocked people into the water. Some suffered when they were hit by the blast blown objects. Based on photos and videos from the scene, we can assume that it looked like a tornado,” Michael Bauditz from the German Weather Service told dpa. .

From the early afternoon, meteorologists warned that a very strong storm could occur in the region. They also did not rule out a gusty wind.

Due to the storm in the region, the firefighters had their hands full. In Kiel, the roofs of a dozen or so buildings have been torn off. Fallen trees and broken branches were also removed.
