Six people are dead and over 20 injured after a tornado ripped through the center of Tennessee, USA. According to local authorities, many houses have been destroyed and tens of thousands of residents remain without electricity.

Strong storms and tornadoes that swept through central Tennessee on Saturday killed six people and injured more than twenty, and severely damaged buildings in many cities.

Three people, including a child, died after a tornado hit Montgomery County north of Nashville near the Kentucky state line, county officials said in a news release. Three more deaths were reported by the Nashville Emergency Operations Center.

Photos posted by the Clarksville Fire Department on social media show destroyed homes with debris strewn on lawns, a tractor trailer turned on its side on the highway and insulation torn off the walls of buildings.

According to the website poweroutage.us, which tracks outages, more than 80,000 Tennesseans remained without power as of Saturday evening.

– This is a sad day for our community. We pray for those who were injured and lost loved ones and homes, said Montgomery County Mayor Wes Golden, quoted by Reuters.

“We are still in the search and rescue phase of this disaster,” Montgomery County said in a statement on Facebook. The statement added that people who need shelter or other forms of assistance can get it at their local school and church.
