Maya Gimes, a student from Jackson State University in Mississippi, will not forget the day when Tornado hit her hometown of Saint Louis. What was supposed to be a mere return home turned into a dramatic fight for life.

“I thought it was over”

On Friday, when the air trunks rolled through the region, Maya was just a few minutes from the house. Suddenly her car was kidnapped by Tornado, began to spin, and then something happened that is hard to imagine.

– I called my mother and shouted “Mom, mom, she takes me” – recalls Maya. – The car was spinning around and I was crying all the time “Jesus, Jesus!”, I closed my eyes and prepared for the worst. I thought it was over – he says.

“You can imagine what a mother feels”

A moment later, when the wind weakened a bit, next to the place where the student lay, an ambulance passed. Maya managed to stop her. – I pointed to my car and the rescuers were shocked. They said it was impossible for me to get out of it alive. They asked if someone had pulled me out of the wreck – he says.

Her mother, who was in Jackson at the time, experienced moments of horror. – I didn't know what was going on. I didn't know what she was talking about, what she “takes her”. You can imagine what a mother feels at such a moment – he says with tears in his eyes.

Today Maya recovers – both physically and emotionally. He is struggling with trauma, fear of the weather, and is still trying to understand how she managed to survive.

– I am extremely grateful that I live – he concludes.
