Tornadoes and powerful storms in at least eight US states have killed 22 people, Reuters reported overnight. McNairy County, Tennessee, was hardest hit. At least seven people died there. The element destroyed homes and businesses, felled trees and devastated many areas.

The Tennessee Department of Health has confirmed seven weather-related deaths in McNairy County on the Mississippi border. Tennessee Emergency Management Agency director Patrick Sheehan said the number of people injured and structures damaged in several counties has yet to be determined.

“Most of the damage was done in residential areas,” Mayor of Adamsville, Tennessee, David Leckner, told the AP. He added that rescue teams went door to door to make sure everyone was found.

Broken school roof

Four people were killed in Wynne, Arkansas, a city of about 8,000 people, 50 miles west of Memphis. The tornado ripped off the roof of the high school and broke windows.

“Huge trees lay on the ground, their stumps reduced to stumps. (…) Rubble and relics of normal life lay scattered inside the destroyed houses, on the lawns: clothes, insulation, roofing felt, toys, broken furniture, a pickup truck with broken windows ” – writes AP.

Also in Arkansas, one person died near Little Rock. More than 2,100 buildings were in the path of the tornado. The National Weather Service estimated that the wind speed was up to 265 km/h. The tornado swept 40 km.

Panic at the concert

In Illinois, three people died in Crawford County after an apartment building collapsed, the state’s Emergency Management Agency said.

In Belvidere, Illinois, 260 people attended a heavy metal concert at the Apollo Theatre. After the roof collapsed, a 50-year-old man died in the rubble and 40 people were injured, including two with life-threatening injuries. Panic broke out in the building. Witnesses said that fragments of the roof fell on the participants of the concert, crushing many people. Others rushed to help, trying to free the victims from under the rubble.

The AP also recalls that strong winds and rain from a violent tornado devastated the city on April 21, 1967. 24 people were killed then.

Fatalities in several states

Three people were killed in Sullivan County, Indiana. Fatalities were also reported in Alabama, Mississippi. The latter was hit just hours after President Joe Biden visited the Rolling Fork community. Last week, tornadoes devastated parts of this city.

South of the Tennessee border in Madison County, Alabama, 90-year-old Ovie Lasater was killed when a tornado destroyed her home, county coroner Tyler Berryhill told Reuters.

Power outages

On Saturday at noon, over 530,000 homes and businesses in disaster-stricken areas were without electricity. The northeast, including New York, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Pennsylvania, were at risk for tornadoes and hail on Saturday evening.
