The municipal ice rink in Toruń (Kuyavian-Pomeranian Voivodeship) will be closed for several months after the cost of maintaining the surface has increased several times. According to Toruń’s Municipal Sports and Recreation Centre, the decision was made due to rising electricity bills. For young hockey players and skaters training there, this means a lost season, coaches and parents of athletes are alarming.

The ice rink of the Municipal Sports and Recreation Center (MOSiR) in Toruń will be closed for several months. In this way, the entity wants to save after a drastic increase in costs. Young athletes stay on the ice

Young hockey players and skaters train at the MOSiR ice rink, for whom the five-month closure of the facility will mean the need to give up training. Parents demand a change of decision, because – as they explain – such a break will be a “drama” for their children. – Nowhere in the world or in Europe is there such a break on the ice. This disqualifies our children from the international position immediately. This is reflected in the national team’s results both in hockey and in figure skating – told a TVN24 reporter the mother of one of the players.

– I hope that the mayor of the city (…) will focus not only on the bars, coins and indicators. There is such a thing as the social aspect, education through sport. We have a plague of obesity among children and teenagers in Poland. I can’t imagine that children sit in front of a computer for five months instead of going to training four or five times a week – emphasized another parent.

MOSiR: electricity bills force us to close

Director of MOSiR in Toruń, Marek Osowski, in an interview with TVN24, pointed out that the closure of the ice rink is a necessity for which the management was forced by ever higher bills – for the electricity necessary to freeze the ice sheet.

According to him, in September 2022, the facility had to pay PLN 400,000 for electricity. The year before it was 100,000. On average, each month the bills of the municipal unit for electricity are three times higher than the year before.

Coaches about the lost season of Toruń athletes

The TVN24 reporter talked about MOSiR’s decision with coaches and players who agree that the closure of the ice rink is deadly for winter sports in Toruń. For example, the beginning of the figure skating season starts in September, and you need to prepare for the competition in advance. The opening of the ice in August would mean a lost season for young players.

– In August, important starts begin. This is the start of the Grand Prix series for juniors and the Challenger Series for seniors. The start of training in September practically excludes competitors from this competition – assessed Mariusz Siudak, a figure skating coach.

On the profile of the synchronized skating team in Toruń in social media, we read that the athletes intend to meet with the city authorities to defrost the ice rink. We strongly believe that things will turn out so that we can continue to carry out our sporting mission.
