They explained that the company’s record profits are not only due to the good economic situation, but above all to the high involvement of employees in the implementation of production tasks, including on days off.

The letters in this regard were signed by the heads of the representative trade union organizations operating at JSW: Solidarity, the Federation of the Miners’ Trade Union and the Kadra union. Representatives of the JSW management board did not comment on the unions’ speech.

The threat of a strike

According to information from the unions, in the technical and economic plan of JSW for 2023, the management board of the company planned a real increase in the costs of energy, investments or services, but did not anticipate an increase in the salaries of JSW’s approximately 22,000 employees. “The Supervisory Board should give a negative opinion on the technical and economic plan for 2023. For ignoring the problem of wages at JSW, inflation, with the simultaneous huge profits of the company, cannot be our consent. Pay increases are not our whim, but a necessity in these difficult times.

Representatives of the social side want the 25% salary increase to apply from January 1, 2023 by introducing new rate tables basic wages. “Failure to comply with the request means the initiation of a collective dispute with the employer and authorizes the social side to take all steps provided for in the act on resolving collective disputes, including a strike,” reads the Tuesday letter to the JSW management board. The unions also asked the company’s supervisory board for a thorough analysis of the company’s technical and economic plan prepared by the management board, especially in terms of labor costs in 2023, and for a negative opinion on this plan. They warned that failure to raise wages would lead to conflict within the company.

Wages increased by 10 percent last year

In December last year, trade unionists reached an agreement with the management board of JSW regarding an increase in the value of the so-called flaps, i.e. regenerative meals for miners. From January 1, their value increased from PLN 30 to PLN 52.35, i.e. 1.5 percent. national minimum wage. This increase costs the company PLN 84 million annually. At the same time, the unions maintained their wage demands and demanded a meeting with the deputy prime minister, the minister of state assets Jacek Sasin. For the first time, the unions proposed a 25% wage increase. December 12 last year. “In response, we were informed that the 25% wage increase postulated for 2023 is not feasible. This response was provided a day later without any analysis or proposal for a meeting on this topic,” the trade unionists wrote to Deputy Prime Minister Sasin in December. In the opinion of the heads of JSW Solidarność, the Federation of the Miners’ Trade Union and the Kadra union, the financial situation of the company, recording record profits this year, is very good. “The net profit for the period of January-September 2022 amounted to PLN 5.9 billion – and it results not only from the good economic situation, but above all from the high involvement of employees in the implementation of production tasks, including on days off, i.e. on Saturday , Sundays and holidays, often at the expense of family life,” unionists wrote in December. Last year, salaries at JSW increased by 10 percent. In July last year, employees were also paid a one-time bonus in the amount of PLN 13,000 to PLN 19,000. PLN gross, which cost the company approx. PLN 480 million. Trade unionists indicate that inflation causes a decrease in miners’ real wages – hence the demand for an adequate increase in wages. The company has not yet officially commented on the union’s wage demands.
