Trading ban on Sunday, September 19 – will stores be open or closed?

Although there is a trade ban on Sunday, September 19, many of the larger stores will open to customers. To this end, large retail chains refer to the exception provided for in the act regarding postal points of contact. However, the tightening of regulations adopted by the Sejm may soon curtail such actions.

We will wait for the next trading Sunday until December 12. The next one is on Sunday, December 19.

The act that introduced restrictions on Sunday trading has been in force since March 1, 2018. However, the act provides for a catalog of 32 exemptions. The prohibition does not apply, among others in post offices, pastry shops, ice cream parlors, liquid fuel stations, flower shops, newspaper shops or coffee shops.

Pursuant to the regulations, the prohibition does not apply to commercial establishments where trade is carried out by an entrepreneur who is a natural person only in person, on his own behalf and on his own account.

Ban on trading on Sundays – shops open

The exception relating to postal points of contact is referred to by larger retail chains that decide to open stores on non-trading Sundays. From Sunday, September 5, some of its stores on Sundays subject to the trading ban “due to the development of postal services” are opened Lidl. He also decided to take such a step Kaufland.

Some branches also open Biedronka on Sundays subject to restrictions. At the beginning of July, we informed about the contract concluded by Jeronimo Martins Polska with Poczta Polska. It is a test extension of cooperation, consisting in the possibility of collecting parcels directly in Biedronka stores.

At the end of 2020, almost half a hundred Stokrotka Express stores established cooperation with the DHL Parcel courier company. In March 2021, the Intermarche network also announced that some of its branches will be opened on Sundays and will provide postal services. Polomarket has joined the group of networks open on the last day of the week.

In November 2019, the Eurocash Group announced that Abc stores could implement postal services in their outlets. Postal services are also provided in Delikatesy Centrum, Lewiatan or Euro Sklep.

We recently reported that Carrefour Polska has signed a framework cooperation agreement with PointPackwhich offers IT solutions supporting sending and receiving parcels. “Launching courier services that give our customers the opportunity to send or collect parcels in Carrefour is another of the amenities that we want to offer them during their everyday shopping,” Izabella Rokicka, Communication Director of Carrefour Polska, informed TVN24 Biznes. Does this mean that the stores belonging to the chain will also be open on non-trading Sundays? This is not known yet.

On Sundays that are subject to the trade ban, not only smaller and larger grocery stores are opened, but also DIY stores.

The Aldi chain of stores is considering the opening of stores on non-trading Sundays.

“The dynamically changing market situation prompts us to seriously consider taking such measures” – reported TVN24 Biznes on Friday afternoon, the Aldi chain of stores in response to questions o possible opening of stores on non-trading Sundays.
