According to information obtained by “Gazeta Wyborcza”, Sebastian M., who is hiding in Dubai and is suspected of causing a tragic accident on the A1 motorway in which a family of three died, has been granted the status of a resident of the United Arab Emirates.
This is one of the most famous tragedies of recent years. On September 16, 2023, a speeding BMW hit with enormous force a Kia passenger car carrying a three-person family returning home from the seaside – a married couple and a five-year-old son. Their car burst into flames, everyone died.
It will soon be a year since this nightmare, and the suspect in the accident – a businessman from Łódź, Sebastian M. – is still at large in Dubai. As “Gazeta Wyborcza” has unofficially established, he received a so-called golden visa from the government of the United Arab Emirates (as the resident status is popularly called).
– We received such unofficial information and we took action to check it, which we have been doing for some time and we have no confirmation – said the spokeswoman for the Prosecutor General, Prosecutor Anna Adamiak, in an interview with Interia.
“Wyborcza” reports that the Polish ambassador in UAE sent a note on this matter to the local Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
– We have sent a question to the embassy in the United Arab Emirates, but we have not received an answer on this matter yet – Paweł Wroński, spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, told Interia.
We have asked the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to confirm this information. We are waiting for a response.
Tragedy on A1
A tragic accident on the A1 motorway in Piotrków County occurred on September 16, 2023. Parents and their five-year-old son died in a fire in a Kia car. Immediately after the accident, firefighters reported that “two passenger cars collided.” On September 18, the Piotrków police issued a statement that “the driver of the Kia hit the energy-absorbing barriers for unexplained reasons at the moment, then the car caught fire.” There was no information that a BMW was also involved in the accident.
On September 24, in another statement by the Piotrków police, it was written that “a Kia and a BMW were involved in the accident”. “The police secured a number of traces and questioned witnesses. We also obtained a number of recordings from cameras, which we hope will help explain what caused this huge tragedy. The subject of this investigation is also to clarify whether the behavior of the BMW driver had a direct impact on the occurrence of the incident in question,” the officers said at the time.
An arrest warrant was issued for the BMW driver, and the image of Sebastian M. was released. The District Prosecutor's Office in Piotrków Trybunalski accused him of causing a fatal accident, which is punishable by up to eight years in prison. The family's attorney filed a motion to change the classification of the act to murder with eventual intent, which is punishable by a higher penalty.
Sebastian M., however, managed to leave Poland and eventually ended up in Dubai, where he remains to this day.
