Halfway through the holidays, it turns out that the number of dangerous road accidents is increasing dramatically. A year ago, their number decreased, so it gave hope for improving safety on Polish roads, but the trend has reversed again. Nearly 200 people have died since the end of June.

Two passenger cars collided head-on in Stołczno in the Człuchów district. A 40-year-old man and woman died. Three people were injured, including two children. – A woman and a child aged 13 were transported to the hospital. On the other hand, the four-year-old was also taken to the hospital by the Polish Medical Air Rescue Service, Brigadier Łukasz Płusa, the spokesman for the Provincial Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Gdańsk, said.

In Bieliny near Kielce, three men standing on the pavement died as a result of the driver’s bravado. The 19-year-old perpetrator will spend the next month in custody. – He exceeded the maximum allowed speed by 24 kilometers per hour. Perhaps the speed limit was even higher – informs Daniel Prokopowicz from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Kielce.

On the roads, death takes a holiday harvest most often when drivers are in a hurry. A 70-year-old passenger of a smaller car did not survive the collision near Toruń. – The perpetrator did not specify whether he confesses or not. He was obsessed with oblivion. He claims that he does not remember anything since leaving Mazowsze – informs Andrzej Kukawski from the District Prosecutor’s Office in Toruń.

For five years, the police update the map of black spots during the holidays. There are more of these every day, which means accidents in which people die. There have been seven fatal accidents in the last 24 hours. We want to get to the place quickly, which is not conducive to safe driving – points out Senior Sergeant Anna Pruska from the Traffic Department of the Provincial Police Headquarters in Łódź.

Police statistics

Drivers take the road with the belief that it is getting safer. The vigilance was lulled by better and better statistics. In 2022, there were the fewest accidents in 50 years. Meanwhile, from June 26 to July 26, there were almost 300 more accidents than at the same time a year ago. More are injured. The balance of fatalities in the halfway point of the holidays is also tragic – 197 people died on the roads.

– The statistics are inexorable. We have better and better vehicles, more technically equipped, which encourage supposedly safe driving, so the driver relies on the vehicle, it has a belt assistant, distance measurement, so it turns off a bit – says Stefan Rzońca, driving instructor.

The more trips behind the wheel, the greater the risk that something will happen. – Here you would probably have to make a revolution to improve anything – believes Mariusz Podkalicki from the Academy of Safe Driving.

– You can see with the naked eye that the outlays on the police have not increased, that the police are standing, measuring the speed in the same places, and the police should surprise us, it should be the flying police – points out Marek Konkolewski, a traffic expert.

There are many traps on the way and it can surprise you with everything. Attentive and careful he will reach his destination.
