On June 27, the first PKP Intercity train from Warsaw to Rijeka – a Croatian port city in the hills will start. There are many attractions waiting for visitors: from fascinating museums and historic temples to the vibrant promenade Korzo.
The Adriatic will be available from Warsaw all summer, four times a week.
Croatian city with challenges
The city is located on the hills at the foot of the Risnjak massif is one of the largest industrial centers of the country, and also the main fishing and transit port. Among the visitors, however, it is not very popular. Tourists are much more often choosing abstracts, such as Split or Dubrovnik.
Rijece does not help too favorable opinions published in local media. In March, during a panel dedicated to urban planning, councilor Iva Rinčić, cited by Novilist.hr, stated that the city was missing “vision, space and people.” The town is also to be struggling with a crisis in the public transport sector and a difficult situation on the apartment market.
Rijeki attractions
A lot of attractions await the rijece in Rijeka, who are not offended by travelers. The third largest Croatian city is a place with a fascinatingly rich history, diverse culture and a unique seaside climate. Rijeka was first inhabited by the Romans who called her Tarsaticae. In the seventh century, Slavic tribes began to live. At the end of the 15th century, it passed to Habsburgs. The local economy was powered by the shipbuilding, refinery and textile industries.
After arriving in the city, it is worth visiting historic temples, such as the shape of a rotunda, a monumental baroque cathedral of St. It greets or the Church of the Ascension of the Blessed Virgin Mary – also maintained in the Baroque style.
The list of places to see will also be the TRSAT castle – one of the oldest fortifications on the Croatian coast, located on a hill of the same name. From the castle tower you can admire a breathtaking view of the area. To get there, however, you need to make a little effort. Stairs of up to 560 degrees lead to the top.
Korzo, museums and restaurants
During your stay in Rijeka, it is also worth walking with the charming Korzo promenade, the main city promenade formed in the place of the former city walls, which were destroyed during the earthquake in 1750. Along the promenade, there are rows of buildings diverse in terms of architecturally – shops, restaurants and cafes. This is the most representative, called the “heart of Rijeka” street of the city, which is teeming with life at almost any time of the day.
When planning a trip, let's also include the local museums. Rijeka received the title of European Capital of Culture for a reason in 2020. Interesting exhibits can be admired, among others In the Maritime Museum dedicated to the history of Croatian navigation, which is located in the historic Governor's Palace or in the innovative Museum of Modern Art, where lectures, workshops and concerts are also organized. At the turn of June and July, numerous artistic events will be waiting for the visitors under the Rijeka Summer Nights festival.
It is also worth going to the Croatian city in search of culinary sensations. In restaurants popular among tourists, we will taste traditional local dishes, among which cod stew, sardine meatballs and carbon risotto reign. Right next to the building of the National Theater, there is a huge fish and fruit and vegetable market, on which local specialties are offered, such as dried figs.
