The Ministry of Sport and Tourism will not allocate over PLN 300 million for the construction of the National Football Training, Research and Training Center in Otwock (Masovian Voivodeship). Minister Sławomir Nitras explained the reasons for this decision in “Fakty po Faktach”. – Being a fan is not a sufficient reason to treat public money carelessly – said Nitras.
On Thursday evening, a message was published on the profile of the Ministry of Sport and Tourism on the X platform (formerly Twitter) informing about the decision invalidating the allocation of over PLN 300 million for the construction of the National Football Training, Research and Training Center in Otwock.
The announcement emphasized that “during the investigation procedure, a violation of internal procedures in force in the Ministry of Sport and Tourism and the rules for examining applications for investment co-financing from the Fund for the Development of Physical Culture was found.”
“We respect the decision of the Minister of Sport and Tourism invalidating the co-financing of the construction of the National Football Training, Research and Training Center. We hope that together we will find a solution to implement this important investment for Polish football. Especially since the co-financing of this project is provided by the Polish Football Association (PZPN). , UEFA and FIFA,” the Polish Football Association wrote in a statement.
The Minister of Sport and Tourism himself referred to his decision in “Fakty po Faktach”. Sławomir Nitras.
– Being a fan is not a sufficient reason to treat public money carelessly. I am sorry to see the comments, especially the statements of the representatives of the Polish Football Association on this matter, because they should know best that in their case the procedures were not followed – said Nitras.
– The application was submitted on time in July, but was later corrected many times due to many errors and irregularities. I can’t even say for sure whether it met the substantive criteria in the final version – he explained.
The minister noted that the application assumed the construction of a “5-star hotel”, and such investments cannot be financed by the ministry. He said that the Polish Football Association did not have land for the construction of the center in Otwock at the time of submitting the application. – In the future, I will have doubts whether I am dealing with a reliable partner – he said.
Nitras: we have huge needs when it comes to general sports
– I am a government official and I have public money at my disposal, which was not well managed in previous years. I stick to the letter of the law – said the guest of “Fakty po Faktach”. – These are not the times when things will get done. Substantive procedures are needed, he added.
Nitras said the ministry finances places where athletes stay, but these are sports boarding houses and hostels, not 5-star hotels. – This is money for sports, not for a hotel. Every penny spent on sports should be looked at twice. We have huge needs when it comes to financing universal sports. We have many districts where there are no swimming pools or ice rinks, he explained.
