Łomża returns to the railway map of Poland

– Today is a very important moment for Łomża, because we restore Łomża to the railway map of Poland. After 30 years, passenger trains will return here – said the Minister of Infrastructure Dariusz Klimczak on Tuesday after signing the contract. The last regular train left Łomża in 1993.

As we read in the PKP PLK announcement, the project restoring the railway to residents consists of two parts. “The basic scope of the investment is primarily a comprehensive modernization of the entire railway line No. 49 Łomża – Śniadowo (17 km). On this section tracks and railway control devices will be replaced. We will rebuild the station in Łomża and a passenger stop in Koziki. There will also be two new stops – Śniadowo Łącznica and Konarzyce. On the route from Śniadów to Łapów (about 60 km) for the needs of passengers We will modernize Kulesze Kościelne stops and Kołaki Czachy and Sokoły station, “wrote railwaymen.

According to Klimczak, the first effects of this investment, i.e. passenger trains in Łomża, will be visible next year. – And in two years we will be able to talk about connections and to Białystok and to Warsaw, and this is the most important thing – he emphasized.

In 110 minutes from Łomża to Warsaw

Deputy Minister of Infrastructure responsible for railway Piotr Malepszak said that this investment is part of a larger plan for Łomża. He explained that it was not only about connecting to Bialystok through Paws. The “second leg” of this connection by Ostrołęka will be connections to Warsaw.

Initially, only four Dobra connections were assumed from Łomża, but – as Malepszak emphasized – there will be at least 14 trains a day. There are 10 Intercity trains in the ministry. Malepszak said that in 2027, with the appearance of new trains from the Polish company Newag, they would connect Łomża with Warsaw in 110 minutes. Passengers will reach Białystok in 95 minutes.

Building works soon

The investment partner is the local government of the Podlasie Voivodship. As the member of the board of the Podlasie Voivodship reminded Jacek Porówek at the conference, the local government submitted a request to the railway program regarding this merger, and on the local government side it was also guaranteed funding for this project in the amount of over PLN 60 million. He added that the local government also had to undertake that as part of regional transport at least four pairs of trains would function on this line within five years. He also announced that as part of Przewozy Regionalne, connections with Warsaw will also be implemented. He argued that the inhabitants of Łomża care about these connections the most.

A member of the board of PKP PLK Marcin Mochocki, who signed a contract with the contractor on Tuesday, said that construction works were to start soon. He expressed the hope that the first effects would be seen next year.

Presenting the details of the investment, he said that it was divided into two stages, into two lines. He pointed out that a larger scope of investment is the Łomża-Nieczowo line, where a comprehensive modernization will be carried out together, among others with the construction of platforms, replacement of railway traffic control devices, with a replacement of the surface, so that the trains could ultimately ride at this line at 120 km/h. These works are to be carried out within a year of signing the contract. Mochocki reported that the reception of these works may last about two months, after which it will be possible to resume movement.

On the other hand, works on the line between Śniadów and Łapami – as Mochocki calculated – will be associated with the modernization of railway crossings, which is to increase safety, and works that will increase the speed of trains will be carried out on selected sections.
