The 14th Trako International Railway Fair is held in Gdańsk. Pesa Bydgoszcz presented a prototype of a locomotive with a hydrogen drive. This is the second vehicle of this type, after Chinese, in the world.
Infrastructure Minister Andrzej Adamczyk said that “the Trako fair is an excellent opportunity to present Polish engineering thought”. – Polish railways are changing. On the one hand, a wide rolling stock program, giving hope for modern trains and refurbished carriages and trains – and this is already happening. On the other hand, innovation and development. Polish engineers respond to the Green Deal of the European Commission with concreteness, said Minister of Infrastructure Andrzej Adamczyk.
– Hydrogen rules, this is how we can define it, both the Alstom railway system and the modern, innovative hydrogen locomotive produced by Pesa with the participation of Orlen and very important financing – because without financing it would not be possible to talk about such innovations at all – created by the Polish Development Fund – pointed out Andrzej Bojanowski, president of the Gdańsk International Fair.
The President of the Polish Development Fund, Paweł Borys, reminded that the institution he managed became an investor in Pesa Bydgoszcz three years ago.
– We saw a great potential for development in it. From the beginning, we wanted to provide Pesa with stable, long-term capital support, but also, above all, to make it an innovative and modern company. We managed to create a unique product, we promise that this is not all – said the head of PFR.
Pesa – hydrogen powered locomotive
Work on the design of a hydrogen-powered locomotive took two years.
The president of Pesa Bydgoszcz, Krzysztof Zdziarski, explained that the new product of the plant is a zero-emission locomotive powered by a hydrogen cell and a battery. The vehicle presented in Gdańsk is a prototype model.
– The locomotive will be used for testing, first at our company, then at the test track in Żmigród and, of course, at our target partner PKN Orlen at the tracks in Płock. This is in fact one of two prototypes of a hydrogen locomotive produced in the world. There is also a Chinese prototype that has been touring for several months. Our locomotive is an absolute leader in Europe – the head of the Bydgoszcz company told journalists.
He explained that the vehicle built in Pesa was a shunting locomotive. – It can service vehicles in ports, factories or other sidings. The track locomotive will be built in the second place, because hydrogen with its very low molecular weight needs large tanks, so the frequency of refueling will play a big role here – explained Zdziarski.
The four-axle hydrogen locomotive from Pesa has traction motors with a power of 4x180kW. The vehicle uses hydrogen tanks – 175 kg, traction batteries LTO type 167.6 kWh and cells with a power of 2×85 kW.
