The number is impressive, and even more so the fact that it’s not over. Doctors from the University Hospital in Wrocław have already transplanted a hundred hearts. They are at the forefront of transplantation in Poland, although it is not a race. Statistics are important, but the most important thing is the well-being of the patient.

49-year-old Miłosz Kadziewicz is in the intensive care unit. His life changed radically. – I came here a week ago completely unexpectedly on the occasion of a doctor’s visit regarding a lung infection. The problem turned out to be much more serious. Serious enough that he will probably require a heart transplant – says Miłosz Kadziewicz. A heart transplant for Mr. Miłosz will be a life-saving procedure. At the University Hospital in Wrocław, doctors have already saved over a hundred patients in this way. This is a huge success of the young transplant center. – In my opinion, the success is mainly due to the enthusiasm and gigantic work of a number of people. In addition to the expertise of people who know, can, want, enthusiasm, charisma is needed – convinces Professor Piotr Ponikowski, Rector of the Medical University of Wroclaw, Director of the Institute of Heart Diseases of the Medical University of Wroclaw.

It takes expertise and charisma to get through traffic jams with the signal on and drive, or even fly hundreds of kilometers to get a heart for a transplant. In 2022, a new heart was brought for Mr. Rafał Paczkowski, a farmer from the Legnickie Pole commune. Before it took off to a new life, doctors had previously disconnected the old heart, which refused to work after a flu infection. – I was walking before the operation, two steps to the first floor, I was going up to the fourth floor, so I had to stand at least 10 times. It just wouldn’t go. After the operation, it is completely different – admits Rafał Paczkowski, a farmer.

Extra transplants

The center in Wrocław started transplanting hearts only two years ago and immediately jumped to second place in the country in terms of the number of organs transplanted, giving way only to the Silesian Center for Heart Diseases in Zabrze. – When we started transplantation, none of the centers decreased its activity this year. The 40 heart transplants we performed in the first year of our activity were an excess – explains Professor Michał Zakliczyński, head of the Department of Heart Transplantation and Mechanical Circulation Support at the University Clinical Center in Wrocław. Apart from Wrocław and Zabrze, doctors from Gdańsk, Poznań, Kraków and two hospitals in Warsaw also transplant hearts in Poland. At the moment, almost 400 people across the country are waiting for such a transplant.
