A storm front that brought heavy rainfall hit central Chile. In the city of Curanilahue, homes and streets were flooded and trees were blown down. Three people died as a result of the storm.
Heavy rain and strong winds wreaked havoc Friday across central Chile, with heavy rain causing rivers to swell and flooding.
“We haven't seen this kind of destruction in 10 years,” said a resident of Curanilahue, a town in the western part of the Biobío region.
Fatalities
According to local media, around 280 liters of rain fell in the city of Curanilahue per square meter. Such heavy rainfall caused rivers to swell and flooded local homes. The streets there turned into rushing streams. People had to be evacuated from the flooded areas. As a result of the element, three people lost their lives.
Winds gusting to over 120 kilometres per hour were also reported in the area. The wind was so strong that trees and power poles were blown down. The violent weather caused power outages and schools in the region were closed, local media reported.
