The operation to extinguish an electric car in Tuchom (Pomeranian Voivodeship) lasted over 21 hours. According to firefighters, in order to cool the car’s batteries, the vehicle had to be placed in a container filled with water.
Marek Szwaba, press officer of the District Headquarters of the State Fire Service in Kartuzy, said that the firefighting operation lasted over 21 hours due to the fact that the batteries of the electric Mercedes EQA needed to be cooled down.
– That’s why the car was placed in a container filled with water. We received the fire report on Sunday before 21:00, and the water from the container was pumped out on Monday at 15:30. The temperature of the battery was then checked to ensure that it did not rise. It took over 21 hours in total from our departure to the event to the return to the unit – reported Szwaba.
Tuchom. The car was cooled in a container with water
According to firefighters, the minimum time to cool down the battery of a burning electric car is seven hours. Due to the fact that in Tuchom – where the fire occurred – there was no suitable place to cool down, firefighters from Gdańsk brought a container in which the Mercedes was immersed.
The place, outside the built-up area where the fire broke out, had to be secured by firefighters throughout the firefighting operation. In total, 16 fire brigades took part in extinguishing the electric car.
No one was injured as a result of the fire. Based on the car’s insurance policy, the losses were estimated at PLN 190,000.
