Units of the Tunisian navy rescued 73 migrants. According to survivors, 47 people, including six children, have still not been found. According to the information provided by the military, the boats were supposed to take on water and sink just after leaving the high seas.

Tunisia is a transfer point for African migrants

Tunisia has recently become the main staging point for African migrants wishing to reach Europe via the Mediterranean Sea, replacing Libya in this role.

Tunisian authorities said that in the first quarter of 2023 alone, they stopped 13,000 people from crossing from Safakis to Sicily.

The financial and political crisis is also driving an increasing number of young Tunisians to seek a better life in Europe.

The prime ministers of Italy and the Netherlands, together with the head of the European Commission, will travel to Tunisia on Sunday, where they will discuss financial aid for that country, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni said on Thursday.
