Six days have passed since the tragic earthquake on the Turkish-Syrian border. Polish firefighters are working on the spot to save the lives of more people. TVN24 reporter Paweł Łukasik talked to the security engineer, the senior captain. – We rotate, because after a few minutes, in this dust and temperature, in this crush, after ten, fifteen minutes, we have to exchange, because we have to spend these eight hours on the rubble – said the firefighter. He pointed out that they were working in this particular place because they received a signal from the dog. “We’re still working, we’re fighting to the last hope,” he said.

Earthquake and aftershocks in Turkey and Syria have taken the lives of more than 25,000 people. Rescuers, including Polish firefighters, are still looking for survivors. Since the beginning of their operations in the quake-affected area, they have saved the lives of twelve people. Their activities are reported from the Turkish Besni by TVN24 correspondent Paweł Łukasik and TVN24 operator Tomasz Burdal.

The reporter asked Senior Captain Leszek Janowski, the security engineer on site, whether there were still any chances of finding survivors under the rubble.

– If there were no chances, we wouldn’t work here, there are always chances. Here we have confirmation from our dogs that someone should be here. We checked it with various geolocation devices and there was no confirmation. We got through the punctures to the next room, we made calls by local residents, we do not have voice confirmation, but the dog keeps pointing – he said. – Now we are waiting for other dogs, with a different sense of smell, we’ll see what happens next. We still hope that we are still going for a living person – he added.

Janowski described that firefighters are working from three sides. – We’re already around the center of the building, so we’ve covered quite a bit. We are trying to clear the first floor from the other side, we have drilled holes on the second floor – he said.

Recalling the case of a rescued woman, the twelfth person pulled from the rubble by Poles, Janowski said that she could be heard. – This morning, at five o’clock, they were listening. It’s quietest at five in the morning, so there were listenings at five, and apparently they heard that something might be going on here, which is why we were directed to this zone. We had confirmation of the dog, that’s why we are still working, we are fighting until the last hope – he noted.

The senior captain reported that 17 firefighters are working in the zone at any one time. – We rotate, because after a few minutes, in this dust and temperature, in this crush, after ten, fifteen minutes, we have to exchange, because we have to spend these eight hours on the rubble, so psychophysical cooperation must be maintained – he explained.
