The city of Erzin, located in the earthquake-hit province of Hatay in southern Turkey, reported no casualties or major damage. This happened thanks to the restrictive actions of the mayor, who did not allow the construction of buildings in violation of applicable standards, reported the Turkish daily “Hurriyet”.

Only a few houses and mosque minarets were damaged in the entire city. The scale of the damage turned out to be small, because most of the residential buildings in Erzin are only four storeys high, and the tallest of them are five storeys, the Turkish newspaper reports.

“In no way did I allow illegal construction. Still, there were those who tried. Initially, we were unable to track them because we did not have enough staff, but later we reported these people to the prosecutor’s office and decided to demolish the buildings (built from violation of the law),” stressed Mayor Erzin Okkes Elmasoglu.

As he added, in Turkey a “complete change of mentality” in terms of compliance with construction standards is required. “Our citizens should not expect the state to tolerate arbitrary construction. They cannot commit such actions themselves. Decisive steps should be taken to demolish such buildings if necessary. We need more efficient control mechanisms,” said the local government official, quoted by ” Hurriet”.

According to the latest data, the death toll in Turkey is over 35,000 and in Syria over 5,500.

Although experts estimate that the chances of finding survivors under the rubble are currently close to zero, reports of more survivors continued to pour in on Tuesday.

President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan ensured that anyone who commits theft or corruption, for example irregularities in connection with the construction of substandard blocks of flats, will be severely punished. According to the announcement of the authorities, it was introduced for this purpose in the areas affected by the cataclysm state of emergency for three months, Al-Jazeera TV recalled on Monday.
