Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan renewed his offer of mediation to end the conflict in Ukraine in a telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin, Erdogan’s press office reported. According to Russian media, Erdogan and Putin also discussed the exchange of wounded prisoners with Ukraine and the creation of a gas hub in Turkey.

“During the conversation, the president Erdogan he repeated that Turkey is ready to undertake the task of mediation in order to establish a lasting peace between Russia and Ukraine,” the statement said. It added that the leaders of the two countries also discussed the issues of the grain corridor and the export of ammonia through the Black Sea, and discussed concrete steps in the project of processing Russian grain into flour in Turkey and sending it to African countries in need.

According to Russian media, Erdogan and Putin also discussed the exchange of wounded prisoners with Ukraine and the creation of a gas hub in Turkey. “Among the priorities is cooperation in the energy sector, including the supply of Russian natural gas and the creation of a regional gas hub in Turkey,” the Kremlin said.

Earlier, the Turkish daily Hurriyet reported that Turkey’s ombudsman, Seref Malkoc, had proposed to his Ukrainian and Russian counterparts to create a humanitarian corridor through Istanbul. Wounded soldiers of both warring sides and civilians from places affected by military operations, mainly children, could be evacuated this way.

Another conversation between Putin and Erdogan

Since the beginning of Russia’s armed attack on Ukraine on February 24, 2022, the Turkish president has often talked with both the Russian dictator and the Ukrainian president, Volodymyr Zelensky.

Ankara’s mediation efforts led, among other things, to a large-scale prisoner exchange between Russia and Ukraine, and to the elaboration of agreements unblocking the export of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea ports.
