The Turkish armed forces carried out an attack, destroying 12 trucks with heavy weapons and missiles, as well as two tanks and ammunition, transported in northeastern Syria by the Kurdish People's Self-Defense Units (YPG) militia, the Turkish secret services said on Tuesday.
Turkish intelligence has published a recording showing the shelling of trucks carrying military equipment for the Kurdish militia. According to the secret services Turkey 12 trucks with heavy weapons and missiles, as well as two tanks and ammunition were destroyed.
The Turkish side clarified that the destroyed weapons were taken over by the Kurdish militia and previously belonged to the armed forces of the deposed leader. Syria Bashar al-Assadwho left their weapons behind when leaving the Qamishli area in northeastern Syria.
According to Turkey, the Kurdish YPG forces are an offshoot of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), which Ankara considers a terrorist organization.
The Turkish-backed Syrian National Army (SNA), as part of Operation Freedom Dawn against the Kurds, took control of the city of Manbij in northern Syria on Monday. SNA fighters have been conducting a massive campaign since December 1 against the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), dominated by Kurds and supported by the West, which have controlled northeastern Syria since 2016.
On Sunday, the representative of the US Department of Defense for the Middle East, Daniel Shapiro, announced that USA will maintain their presence in eastern Syria and take the necessary actions to prevent the resurgence of the so-called Islamic State.
