Turkish security forces killed Islamic State leader Abu al-Hussein al-Husseini al-Quraishi on Saturday, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Sunday. This is the third IS leader to be killed since 2022.
– This individual was neutralized in an operation conducted yesterday by the Turkish national intelligence organization in Syria Erdogan said in an interview with broadcaster TRT Turk.
The Turkish president explained that the intelligence services had been tracking the IS leader for a long time.
The operation took place in Gindajris, a city in northern Syria, about seven kilometers from the border with Turkey.
He has been the leader since November
Al-Quraishi became the fourth leader ISIS in November, when the group announced the death of his predecessor. His photos have not been released. The founder of the Islamic State, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, was killed by the forces USA in 2019.
This is the third IS leader to be killed since 2022. The late Abu al-Hasan al-Hashemi al-Quraishi took over the reins of the organization after the death of Abu Ibrahim al-Hashemi al-Quraishi, who was killed by blowing up himself and his family in February 2022 during a US airstrike in northwestern Syria.
IS announced in 2014 the creation of a caliphate in the territories it occupied in Syria and Iraq. It has since lost control of the territory, and the caliphate has disintegrated under the onslaught of governmental and international forces.
