Police at the Istanbul airport detained a man on suspicion of trying to take 1.5 thousand poisonous spiders and scorpions out of Turkey. It is about the curator of the American Museum of Natural History, reports the Anatolia agency.

Lorenzo Prendini was detained at the Istanbul airport on Sunday as part of an operation carried out by the police in connection with the detection of his attempt to export endemic animal species abroad.

88 test tubes with liquids, including scorpion venom, and 58 bags containing approximately 1,500 scorpions and spiders were found in the man's luggage. The probation officer may be charged with attempted smuggling.

DNA data from endemic species of venomous animals inhabiting Turkey can be used to produce medical substances, writes the Turkish Anatolia Agency.

The market value of one liter of scorpion venom is approximately $10 million.
