– I have not met anyone among policemen, Border Guard officers or soldiers who takes satisfaction from sometimes having to use force – said Prime Minister Donald Tusk in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24, when asked about cases of using pushbacks on the Polish-Belarusian border. He added that sometimes there is an “obvious conflict between what the state must do to protect the border and what people who are sensitive to helping other people in need want and must do.”

Prime Minister Donald Tusk he spoke in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24 about securing the eastern border and the situation on the Polish-Belarusian border.

– I want to appeal to all people to understand the situation we are in. I receive daily reports – sometimes two, sometimes three times a day – about further groups organized by Lukashenko that aggressively want to cross the Polish border, he said.

Tusk on pushbacks and the situation at the border. He talks about the “obvious conflict”

He was asked about the use of the so-called pushbcks and how it relates to the principles of humanitarianism.

– I talked for a long time there, at the border, with Border Guard officers and their commanders. And believe me, they also feel it very much. There is no one there, I have not met anyone among policemen, Border Guard officers or soldiers who would derive satisfaction from sometimes having to use force to protect the Polish border, said the head of government. But – as Tusk continued – “sometimes there is an obvious conflict between what the state must do to protect the border and what people want and must do, whose sensitivity tells them to help other people who are in need.”

Tusk also said that he “will look for a solution that will also obviously respect the efforts of those people” who “out of good heart” are involved in helping those in need at the border.

He added that “very different forces are operating on the Polish-Belarusian border.” – Some also pretend to be morally committed while doing business – he noted.

Tusk on “Shield East”: there will be fortifications, shelters, afforestation

The Prime Minister also talked about the “East Shield” and the announcement of the construction of a fortification system that will strengthen security on the eastern border.

Tusk reminded that it concerns 400 kilometers of the border with Belarus and Russia. As he explained, “there will be fortifications, shelters, and infrastructure that will also restore a sense of security and normality to the people living there.” – This will be everything, including forestation and, where necessary, areas flooded with water – said the head of government. He assured that Poland will be safe and “no one will break into Poland with hostile intentions through the eastern border.”

Prime Minister: Together with the Prime Minister of Greece, we are preparing a letter

The head of government was also asked about the “iron dome”. Earlier on Monday, he announced that in a few days, together with other European prime ministers, he would present a project to build such a dome over Poland and Europe.

Prime Minister: in a few days we will present the project of building an iron dome over Poland and Europe

– Currently, together with the Prime Minister Greece We are preparing a letter to European institutions – the European Commission, the European Council – regarding air defense for all of Europe – he said.

– These are still political initiatives and it is still quite difficult to agree on jointly implemented and financed details. This dome is not a vault made of steel, but an extremely complicated, very expensive system requiring the latest technology. This requires extraordinary coordination and is indeed very expensive, Tusk said.

He emphasized that for him “it is very important to build pressure” on this matter. – I have been supporting this from the very beginning of my term as Prime Minister and it resonates really well in Europe. Slowly, these most cautious and skeptical leaders are beginning to understand that if we are to talk seriously about the security and military strength of Europe, we must start with this dome, because then the European advantage over Russia – financial, economic and technological – will find its full expression – said the head of government . – Europe safe from the sky will be a continent – or as an organization, i.e European Union – who may start dictating conditions again – said the Prime Minister.

He pointed out that the idea of the European dome, of which he feels he is a co-author, is to “eliminate unwise competition between member states.” He added that “it must be a joint venture.”

The European Iron Dome, abbreviated ESSI (European Sky Shield Initiative), is a project concerning the construction of an allied European air defense system. The initiative was proposed by the Chancellor German Olaf Scholz in 2022.
