People of culture defended Jerzy Owsiak. An open letter was written. This is a very important appeal

Artists and respected people from the world of culture and media decided to take action in connection with the hate campaign spread by TV Republika and wPolsce24 against Owsiak and his Foundation. The content of the open letter they wrote was made available by the Basta Foundation. First, the authors of the letter recalled the words of Marian Turski that “Auschwitz did not fall from the sky”and the effects of hate speech are real and may have tragic consequences.

“Hate starts with words, but ends with actions that take lives. This was the case of Paweł Adamowicz, murdered during the finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity, and today a similar threat affects Jurek Owsiak – the founder and leader of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity – a man who has been tirelessly working for decades helps those in need,” we read. It is worth emphasizing that January 13 was the sixth anniversary of the death of the president of Gdańsk, who died on stage during the finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity from a tragic knife attack.

“We are observing with concern and indignation the hate campaign against the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity and Jurek Owsiak, which has been escalating in the media and public space for years. The recent broadcasts of materials on Telewizja Republika and wPolska24, which openly incite aggression against him, are not just a matter of opinion, but they can be a dangerous prelude to further tragedies. The death threats that Owsiak received after these publications are proof that words have the power to destroy,” we read in the publication.
