The National Radio and Television Broadcasting Authority has extended TVN24 its broadcasting license. Krzysztof Śmiszek from the Left said that the time when the TVN24 station waited for the license was “19 months of the game about whether you can shut the mouths of free media or not”. Deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk from PiS, referring to a separate resolution adopted by the National Broadcasting Council, said that “the license is granted”, but at the same time it is a “clear signal” that “this legal status must be clarified”.
The spokeswoman of the National Broadcasting Council, Teresa Brykczyńska, said that “The National Broadcasting Council has extended the license for TVN24. “ She informed that even before the vote on the license for TVN24, the KRRiT adopted a resolution on “taking measures to organize the principles of broadcasting radio and television programs in Poland in the scope of the activities of entities from outside the European Economic Area”. When asked by journalists, what is the convergence between the licensing process and the resolution adopted, she stated that “it is essential, because without this resolution the National Council will not vote on the license”.
Śmiszek: 19 months of play to see if you can shut your mouths to free media
The matter was commented on in “Kropka nad i” on TVN24 by the deputy of the Left Krzysztof Śmiszek and the deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Szymon Szynkowski aka Sęk from the Law and Justice party.
Śmiszek assessed that the situation related to the granting of a license to TVN24 is “PiS capitulation”. – Because the law says very unequivocally that if a media entity meets specific conditions, there is no reason not to extend a license – he added.
– 19 months of play on whether you can shut your mouth to the free media or not, 19 months of tugging this way or that. This is a disgrace for the National Broadcasting Council – assessed Śmiszek.
Śmiszek: this resolution is a threat against TVN
He also referred to the content of the resolution adopted by the National Broadcasting Council prior to the vote on the license for TVN24. – This is a threat against TVN that it will pursue TVN for not meeting criteria that are not yet described in the law, because the act has not entered into force – he assessed.
According to Śmiszek “we are dealing with legal gibberish”. – Because the resolution is not a generally applicable law, secondly, the resolution was adopted a few minutes before the decision on the license for TVN24 was made – he pointed out.
In his opinion, “The National Broadcasting Council has been politicized, filled with political nominees.” “Any authoritarian power begins with two things – free courts and free media,” he said.
The deputy of the Left emphasized that “there is an absolute desire to silence journalists who do not play the way Nowogrodzka dances (this is where the PiS headquarters is located – ed.)”.
Szynkowski vel Sęk: the legal status needs to be clarified
Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk, speaking about the resolution adopted by the National Broadcasting Council, referred to the anti-TVN act, which was rejected by the Senate and returned to the Sejm.
The issue of the license for TVN24 and the anti-TVN act are two different issues that have been joined in time.
The deputy head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs said that the legislative process over the anti-TVN law “should be continued”. – I voted (in the Sejm – ed.) In favor of this bill, because it clarifies the legal status, he argued.
– This resolution (adopted by the National Broadcasting Council – ed.) Clearly shows that this whole legislative process is not aimed at TVN, we are not dealing with any “lex TVN” or any attack on TVN – he said.
– TVN is not guilty of this legal status that it is imprecise. You are not to blame for it, therefore you should not be held responsible for it. The license (for TVN24 – ed.) Is granted, but at the same time there is a clear signal that this legal status must be clarified so that the owner from outside the European Economic Area would not have a majority share. This matter is very clear – said the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
