Almost PLN 10 million – this is the total amount of claims in cases against Telewizja Polska for materials broadcast in 2016-2023 brought by people and institutions for infringement of personal rights – TVP announced in a press release.

Lawsuits against TVP under Jacek Kurski's rule

There are over 120 cases pending, including some during settlement talks – it was written in a statement sent to PAP. Most of them concern the period when he was the president of Telewizja Polska Jacek Kurskiand programs produced by the Television Information Agency – added.

– This is the price that the company, and de facto each taxpayer, will pay for the harmful activities of (former TVP president Jacek) Kurski and propagandists from “Wiadomości” or TVP Info. For hating and destroying people – commented the general director of TVP, Tomasz Sygut, quoted in the letter. – But this is just a sample of the harmful activities that led to the destruction of the image of Telewizja Polska – he added.

Although the company is trying to reach amicable agreements, “given the current financial situation, it is impossible to meet all property claims resulting from the issue of the disputed materials,” we read. “As a result, in order to protect the Company's interests, TVP is often forced to continue to participate in lawsuits and try to reduce the amounts of financial claims before the court. Otherwise, the current management of the Company could expose itself to accusations of acting to its detriment,” it was announced.

Changes in TVP

On December 19, 2023, the Minister of Culture and National Heritage, Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz, decided to dismiss the existing and appoint new supervisory boards of TVP, Polskie Radio and PAP, which changed the companies' management boards. Tomasz Sygut was announced as the new president of Telewizja Polska. The decision of the head of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage was criticized by politicians PISwho assessed that it was illegal.

At the same time, the budget-related act includes a provision on the possibility of transferring money from the state budget to public media. In total, it amounted to nearly PLN 3 billion. The act states that the minister responsible for the budget, i.e. the minister of finance, “may transfer” such funds, but is not obliged to do so. Finance Minister Andrzej Domański emphasized that the payment was suspended for now.

President Andrzej Duda he ultimately vetoed the budget-related bill, pointing out that “there cannot be consent to this in view of the blatant violation of the constitution and the principles of a democratic state of law.”

Subsequently, public media companies, including TVP, were put into liquidation by the Ministry of Culture.
