According to Met Office calculations, the average daily temperature in Great Britain in the period from 1 June to 31 August inclusive amounted to 14.37 degrees Celsiuswhich means that it was about 0.22 degrees lower than the long-term average for this period.

It was the lowest daily average since summer 2015, when it was 13.91 degrees.

UK Summer Coldest in Almost a Decade

However, fluctuations in relation to the multi-year average differ in individual regions of the country. In England, the daily average was only 0.07 percent lower than the multi-year average for this period, but in Scotland it was 0.4 degrees lower, and in Northern Ireland – 0.45 degrees lower.

The Met Office also noted that the daily average of 14.37 degrees was lower than the average for 1991-2020of 14.59 degrees, but the same 14.37 degrees would have been considered evidence of a warm summer in the previous 30 years – in the period 1961-90 the average daily temperature in June, July and August was 13.78 degrees.

UK Weather. Climate Change Pointed Out

“While this summer may have felt cool compared to recent years, it is important to note its place in a historical context, with the UK's changing climate and the increasing frequency of warmer summers. This can be seen from our observations,” said Emily Carlisle, from the Met Office.

Five of 10 warmest years in the UK in the history of measurements has been recorded since 2000.

The highest temperature in the UK this summer was recorded August 12 in Cambridge – at the peak of the day it was then 34.8 degrees Celsius.
