There have been three powerful explosions at a Russian military base in occupied Berdyansk, said the head of the local administration, Viktoria Halicina, who is loyal to Kiev. She added that these explosions were followed by another 15, of lesser magnitude. A fire broke out at the scene.
Almost all ambulances and fire trucks available in the city went to the base, added Wiktoria Halicina, quoted by the Suspilne TV portal.
“Neighbors (from Berdyansk) are noisy for the second day in a row. According to local reports, something went wrong with the occupiers in the vicinity of the airport, where they had previously deployed their military equipment and drones. (…) The whole city heard the explosions,” he wrote on Telegram Ivan Fedorov, the pro-Ukrainian mayor of Russian-controlled Melitopol. The official added to the post a map of the airport where the explosion took place.
Berdyansk, which had a population of over 100,000 before the Russian invasion and is located on the Sea of Azov, was captured by the Russian army on February 7, three days after the Kremlin invaded Ukraine. In the second half of March, Ukrainian forces destroyed the Russian assault ship Saratov, stationed in Berdyansk, belonging to the Black Sea Fleet.
