The Russian attack on Odessa, which damaged buildings in the UNESCO-listed city center, marks a new stage in the escalation of violence against Ukraine’s cultural heritage, UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azoulay said on Sunday. A total of 25 monuments suffered, including buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries.

– This monstrous destruction represents a new stage in the escalation of violence against cultural heritage Ukraine – said Azoulay, referring to the effects of the Russian night attack on Odessaas a result of which several buildings in the center were damaged, including the over 200-year-old Cathedral of the Transfiguration of Christ.

– I demand from the Russian Federation to take visible steps to comply with its obligations in the sphere of international law regarding the protection of heritage – underlined the director general of UNESCO. As a result of a missile attack Russia in Odessa on the night from Saturday to Sunday, 25 monuments were damaged, including buildings from the 19th and 20th centuries.

This was another shelling this week of this port city, whose infrastructure is crucial for the functioning of the so-called grain initiative on the Black Sea. Russia announced its withdrawal from this agreement in order to block Ukrainian grain exports.
