Recent satellite images from the besieged city of Bakhmut in Ukraine show the extent of damage to the area’s land, homes and infrastructure since the fighting intensified.

Most of the civilians were evacuated from Bakhmut, a city to the east Ukraine. Those who remain face near-constant bombing and are forced to live without access to heating and electricity.

Putin proposes 36-hour ceasefire

The Ukrainian side claims that Russia – after months of futile waves of attacks – made minimal territorial gains and paid with the lives of thousands of soldiers. According to the Kremlin, Bakhmut is the key to the goal of capturing the rest of Donetsk Oblast, one of the four partially occupied regions.

President of Russia Vladimir Putin called on Thursday for a 36-hour ceasefire in Ukraine to celebrate Orthodox Christmas, but the move was rejected by Kyiv, which said there could be no truce until Russia withdrew its troops from the occupied lands.
