Estonia will hand over all its 155mm howitzers to Ukraine, said the Estonian ambassador to Kiev, Kaimo Kuusk, quoted on Monday in a communiqué of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. As he added, the government in Tallinn wants to set a precedent so that other countries will not have excuses not to provide Kiev with the necessary weapons.
Total value of military aid donated by Estonia thus exceeding the equivalent of 1 percent of the country’s GDP. The authorities in Tallinn will also continue support of a different kind, offering Ukrainian soldiers both basic and specialized training, the staff informed on Facebook.
Estonian Ambassador to Ukraine Kaimo Kuusk stated that the transfer of all howitzers is to set a precedent that will prevent other countries from refusing to supply Ukraine with the necessary weapons.
Estonian aid for Ukraine
On 19 January, the Estonian government accepted the proposal of a record-breaking military aid package for Ukraine, submitted to the Ministry of Defense, which included: dozens of 155 and 122 mm howitzers, military vehicles, over 100 grenade launchers and ammunition. The latest aid tranche was valued at around €113 million.
The decision to send record support to Ukraine is primarily intended to convince Germany and other allies to do the same, said Kusti Salm, secretary general of the Estonian Ministry of Defence, quoted on Friday by the ERR portal.
“It’s inspiring when we say we’re taking risks at the expense of our own defensive capabilities. In that case, how can other Western allies claim that they cannot do it because they would have to risk a lot? Salm noted.
