Victims of the helicopter crash in Brovary were bid farewell in Kiev. 14 people were killed near Kiev, including the head of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine Denys Monastyrski. The mourning ceremony was attended by crowds of Ukrainians, including the highest representatives of the government and the presidential couple.

Volodymyr Zelensky and his wife Olena came to the Ukrainian House in the center of Kiev, where the last farewell to high-ranking Interior Ministry officials who died in a catastrophe in Brovary, located near the capital, took place. The presidential couple laid flowers on the coffins of the dead and expressed their condolences to the families. Zelensky couldn’t hold back his tears.

The ceremony was also attended by the head of the president’s office Andriy Yermak, adviser to the late interior minister Anton Herashchenko and former president Petro Poroshenko. Parliamentarians, ambassadors accredited in Kiev and religious leaders appeared.

“The heart is filled with pain and the soul is filled with indescribable sadness. Ukraine loses its best sons and daughters every day,” Zelensky said on Telegram.

In the Ukrainian House, the leadership of the Ministry of the Interior: Minister Denys Monastyrski, his two deputies – Yevheni Jenin and Yuri Lubkovych – as well as their associates were bid farewell.

Separately, on Saturday, at the airport in Nijin, mourning ceremonies for the helicopter crew will be held. Two other victims of the tragedy were bid farewell to Browary that day: five-year-old Miłana and her mother Olena, who died when the helicopter fell to the ground.

The crash happened near a kindergarten on Wednesday. In total – on board and on the ground – 14 people died, 25 were injured, including 11 children.

Denys Monastyrski

monastic, a lawyer by education, headed the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine from 2021. He was a close associate of Zelensky. Previously, he headed the parliamentary law enforcement committee. He was elected to the Verkhovna Rada from the presidential list of the Servant of the People party. Zelensky proposed his candidacy for the post of interior minister. The then 41-year-old Monastyrski emphasized that his consent to run for this position was “the most difficult decision in his life” for him.

As the deputy head of the Ministry of the Interior, Jenin dealt with cooperation with the power ministries of other countries. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) said it was considering several versions of the cause of the crash, including violation of flight rules, technical malfunction of the helicopter and “deliberate actions to destroy the means of transport”.
