Ukrainian president on Friday Volodymyr Zelensky he talked with the commanders about strengthening the forces defending Bakhmut. In turn, Zelensky’s adviser, Mykhailo Podolak, in an interview with the Italian newspaper La Stampa, assessed that Bakhmut was a “strategic success, also in the event of the withdrawal of Ukrainian forces.”

When asked why this city needs to be defended, Podolak replied. – Russia changed tactics. It refrained from bombing civilian targets to concentrate on direct engagement.

According to Podolak, it is “of fundamental importance for the Russians to make progress in this direction.” “We, however, have two goals: eliminate as many Russian military personnel as possible and focus them (the Russians) on a few exhausting key battles to destroy their offensive, and concentrate our forces elsewhere for a counter-offensive in the spring,” Zelensky’s adviser explained.

Russian losses

Spokesman of the Eastern Grouping of the Armed Forces Ukraine Serhiy Cherevaty, in an interview with Espreso television on Friday, said that 191 Russian soldiers had been killed and 319 wounded in the last few days in the battles near Bakhmut.

Cherevaty said that Bakhmut is now the center of combat operations in Ukraine and for many weeks Russian forces have been carrying out dozens of assaults in this direction every day. As he added, there were 57 clashes in the last 24 hours, of which 23 in the vicinity of the city. At the same time, intense Russian shelling continued: there were 188 of them, including 20 in the city itself.

– In recent days, the Russians are either trying to close the loop in order to surround or break through to the city itself. Our command sees these intentions, anticipates similar actions and tries to make efforts to limit the effectiveness of the enemy as much as possible, said the spokesman of the Eastern Grouping of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
