You can’t win a war with a gradual approach. We have to surprise and impose our tactics on the opponent. Therefore, we must deliver all the weapons that Ukrainians need as quickly as possible, said former Prime Minister of Denmark and former NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen in “Fakty po Faktach”. He went on to talk about the “reason” why “we are also part of the war”, Kiev’s membership in NATO, and also referred to the case of the rocket that fell near Bydgoszcz in December.

Former Prime Minister Denmark and former Secretary General FOR THIS Anders Fogh Rasmussen talked to Piotr Kraśka in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24. He was asked, among other things, what he thought about the Ukrainian counteroffensive and its pace. – I think we should leave it to the Ukrainians. Let them decide how to conduct this counteroffensive, he replied. – And we should ask ourselves whether we are responsible for the slow progress of this counteroffensive because we hesitated too much in providing the weapons the Ukrainians need. So while we were talking and hesitating (Vladimir Putin he took advantage of this time to strengthen his defenses in the east Ukraine. That’s why it’s so difficult to conduct this counteroffensive now, he added.

Former NATO chief on the “reason” why “we are also part of the war”

Denmark is one of the countries that officially announced that they would donate the F-16 to Kiev. However, Ukrainian pilots must undergo training before they can operate the fighters. As the interviewer Piotr Kraśko noted, Ukraine had been asking for these planes almost from the beginning of the full-scale war, and if it had received them then, they would have already been flying in the Ukrainian sky. – So it is our Western fault – Kraśko emphasized – what is happening now in Ukraine.

– I fully agree and do not understand why we have imposed all these restrictions on our own arms supplies (for Ukraine – editor’s note). We had one thing to do: provide all the weapons the Ukrainians needed to win this war. You can’t win a war (…) with a gradual approach. We have to surprise and impose our tactics on the opponent. Therefore, we must deliver all the weapons Ukrainians need as quickly as possible, said the politician.

He also admitted that he thinks that “most people” in the Western world believe that the ongoing conflict is also their war. – Of course, there are other views. But you can’t be surprised that we are de facto part of this war. And this is in full compliance with international law. According to the card UN a country that is attacked by another country has the right to self-defense, but in addition it also has the right to ask allies for help in this self-defense. And that’s exactly what’s happening. The Ukrainian government asked for our help, and we are helping Ukraine, and for this reason we are also part of the war,’ he explained.

Ukraine’s membership in NATO

Rasmussen also talked about the arrangements of the July summit of the North Atlantic Alliance in Vilnius. He said that “there was a clear commitment on the part of the G7 countries, the world’s largest economies, to provide a security guarantee for Ukraine.” – This is absolutely in line with the key security plan that I prepared for President (Volodymyr) Zelensky with his chief of staff Andriy Yermak. a year ago – he emphasized.

– But in my opinion, NATO allies should also have presented Ukraine with an invitation to join NATO – being aware that there will be some delay from the moment of issuing the invitation to the moment of Ukraine joining NATO – he noted. Nevertheless, the politician continued, “it would be a very clear signal to Putin” that Ukraine will be a NATO member.

He added that he was “almost sure that Ukraine will join NATO.” “We already made that decision in 2008. Ukraine will become a member of NATO. The problem was that we had not drawn a roadmap for this membership. We have done nothing to move Ukraine towards NATO membership. Which, in turn, put Ukraine in the gray zone, in the waiting room. And this is a very dangerous place. We must be aware that gray areas are danger zones. Neutrality does not exist in today’s security environment, said the former Danish Prime Minister.

Rasmussen: what we need is a new security architecture for Europe

– What can we do now to help Ukraine win this war much faster? – Kraśko asked.

According to Rasmussen, “first of all, we should provide all the armaments that the Ukrainians need.” – They have the will to fight. It is our duty to give them the means to fight. If we do this, provide fighters, provide long-range missiles, provide everything they need to regain their lost land, I am convinced that the Ukrainians will be able to win this war. Which means expelling all Russian soldiers from Ukrainian territory, he replied. – Then, next year, there will be a NATO Summit to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Alliance. It seems to me that this will be an excellent opportunity to invite Ukraine to join NATO, he continued.

The TVN24 guest also noted that “as a NATO member, Poland, (or) any other country, should not be afraid of an open Russian attack.” – Naturally, we must be aware of the risk that Russia will try to test these red lines and borders. They will, no doubt about it. But up until that point, Putin had refrained from attacking NATO countries. This is exactly why we should let Ukraine into NATO, because it would ultimately become a 100% security guarantee for Ukraine. And thus also for the whole of Europe – he argued.

He assessed that “what we need is a new security architecture for Europe, in which Ukraine belongs to NATO as a bulwark against the still aggressive Russia.”

Russian missile near Bydgoszcz – coincidence or system testing? “It could have been both.”

Later in the conversation – not in “Fakty po Faktach”, but in full version of the interview on TVN24 GO – the former Secretary General of the North Atlantic Alliance was asked, among other things, about the case of the Russian missile that fell near Bydgoszcz in December 2022. The case came to light at the end of April, when her remains were accidentally found. To this day, the rulers have not explained to the citizens what really happened.

Rasmussen was asked whether he considered it an incident or whether the Russians were testing our defense systems in this way.

– It could have been both. But honestly, I think it was more of an accident,” the former Danish prime minister replied.
