On Tuesday evening it was held over two hours conversation between the presidents of the USA and Russia, Joe Biden and Vladimir Putin. Biden and Putin discussed during the weeks of increasing tensions over the concentration of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine.

After the talks, a statement was published on the website of the White House. “President Biden expressed the deep concern of the United States and our European allies about the escalation of Russian forces around Ukraine and made it clear that the United States and its allies would respond with significant economic and other measures in the event of a military escalation,” it wrote.

Former president Aleksander Kwaśniewski referred to the increasingly tense situation on the Ukraine-Russia line in “Fakty po Faktach” on TVN24.

– Putin is implementing his strategy, which is nothing new. He wants Ukraine in his sphere of influence, he said. At the same time, he stated that he did not believe that the Russian president would decide to carry out a military intervention there.

As he stated, “Putin wants to conquer Ukraine, but not necessarily by invading Ukraine.” – In my opinion, his plan is such that through this permanent destabilization he wants to lead to a point in which the Ukrainians themselves will support a shift in politics towards Russia – he assessed.

As Kwasniewski continues, this “permanent destabilization is calculated to exhaust people.” – Even if this Western perspective is not clearly opened to them, they are still not in NATO, they do not have any plan from the European Union as if they could join it. If this state continues, such psychological exhaustion will take place – he pointed out.

However, Kwasniewski noted that Putin, when considering a military intervention in Ukraine, must be aware that there is a strong anti-Russian sentiment in that country. – The anti-Russian sentiments there, the Ukrainian, freedom and identity moods are very strong, he will not be able to go so easily with this young generation (Ukrainian – ed.) – he added.

Kwaśniewski: Nobody even asks us about matters as fundamental as what is happening with Ukraine

Kwaśniewski was also asked about the attitude of Polish diplomacy towards the situation in Ukraine. President Biden consulted various European leaders before talking to Putin, but not the Polish side.

In this context, the PiS deputy representative, Radosław Fogiel, said that “it would seem that our perspective could be valuable, but after all, we will not impose anything on anyone. “

Kwaśniewski, referring to Fogel’s words, stated that “he says nonsense”. – Poland should impose itself in such matters, it is in our most profound interest – he emphasized.

He recalled that during the presidency of him and his successors, Poland actively participated in the international debate on Ukraine. – Today there is no such activity, hence there are no calls to the Polish president or prime minister – he said.

– Due to the passivity in direct contacts with Ukraine, we do not have an interesting opinion on what is going on there (…), it puts us aside in geopolitics – he said.

He also referred to the fact that Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi was among the politicians consulted by Biden. – The question of the Italian prime minister what to do with Ukraine only shows where we are – continued Kwasniewski.

– Poland has moved to such a place in foreign policy that no one even asks us about matters as fundamental as what is happening with Ukraine and on our eastern flank. To say that it is a fall is not enough to say – assessed the former president.
