Ukrainian forces are attacking Russian positions near the Berkhiv Reservoir northwest of Bakhmut, as evidenced by a video of Russians fleeing Ukrainian artillery fire, the American Institute for War Studies (ISW) reported on Saturday. According to the center, this seems to confirm the opinions of Russian military bloggers, who inform about the territorial gains of Ukrainians in this area. The Ministry of Defense in Moscow denies these reports.

The Institute for War Studies said geolocalized photographs show Russian forces fleeing Ukrainian artillery on the southern shore of the Berkhiv Reservoir, about four kilometers northwest of Bakhmut. The American think tank added that Russian forces continued ground attacks in and around Bakhmut.

The ISW added that these photos confirm the opinions of many Russian military bloggers that the Ukrainians recaptured the areas northwest of Bakhmut, the areas between Bohdanivka and Berchivka.

The center noted that several Russian sources had previously warned that Ukrainian forces might try to encircle the mercenary units of the Wagner Group in Bakhmut. The founder of the mercenary company, Yevgeny Prigozhin, emphasized that Russian forces were approaching Berchivka and claimed that the Ukrainians were occupying positions 500 meters from the north-western border of the city.

However, the Russian Ministry of Defense – emphasized the Institute of Internal Affairs – claims that the reports about Ukrainian achievements at Bakhmut are untrue. He argues that two Russian independent brigades are repelling attacks in the Berchivka area, which is influenced by “favorable conditions around the Berkhivsky Reservoir”.
