In recent days, the Ukrainians have carried out counter-offensive operations with varying degrees of success on at least three sections of the front, including in the west of the Zaporizhia region, the American Institute for War Studies reported, pointing to the effective defense of the Russians. However, the center stressed that “Ukrainian attacks in the west of Zaporozhye do not represent the full range of Ukrainian possibilities in the current counter-offensive.”

The American Institute for War Studies noted, citing the Ukrainian side, that in the area of Bakhmut the Ukrainians switched from defense to attack and advanced about 200 meters, and on the outskirts of the city by almost 2 kilometers.

According to ISW, Ukrainian forces have achieved local tactical successes in the western part of the Donetsk Oblast. In addition, offensive operations were carried out in the west of the Zaporizhia region, but apparently (at the time of publication) they did not bring any progress.

According to ISW, the Russians defended themselves in a well-organized way in the Zaporozhye section and, as a result, were to regain their previous positions. The center also notes that the Ukrainians most likely lost military vehicles from Western supplies during these fights. The ISW points out that losses on the Ukrainian side are inevitable and they do not determine the course of the counterattack. “The impact of initial losses of Western or any other equipment should not be exaggerated, especially when it comes to operations to penetrate fortified defensive positions,” it said.

“Ukrainian attacks in the western part of the Zaporizhia oblast do not represent the full Ukrainian capabilities during the current counter-offensive,” the ISW assessed, noting that Ukraine it is capable of conducting coordinated and effective operations using multiple mechanized brigades, which it proved during the counter-offensive in the Kharkiv region last September, even before large deliveries of Western equipment and additional training.

Situation in Ukraine – June 9. Report by Oleh Bilecki TVN24

“The counter-offensive is likely to be composed of multiple elements of varying scale, including localized attacks, and the smaller undertakings do not represent maximum capability,” it said.

Before the counteroffensive, Ukraine was to form additional forces of about 12 brigades, including nine equipped with Western equipment. The HEI estimates that at the present stage only a part of this large reserve has been engaged, therefore no hasty conclusions should be drawn at this initial stage as to the counter-offensive potential.
