Relations between Ukraine and Poland should receive a new impetus, and all problematic issues should be resolved in the spirit of mutual trust and respect, said the office of President Volodymyr Zelensky during his meeting with Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski. The head of Polish diplomacy also met with the Prime Minister of Ukraine, Denys Shmyhal.
Volodymyr Zelensky pointed out the importance of the first foreign visit of the new head of the Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ukraine – the Ukrainian president’s office said in a statement on Friday.
Zelensky thanked Poland for significant support for Ukraine in countering the Russian invasion and for providing shelter to Ukrainian citizens who were fleeing military operations.
The interlocutors agreed that bilateral relations should receive a new impetus, and all problematic issues should be resolved in the spirit of mutual trust and respect, the president’s office said.
“Opening a new page”
– We hope to open a new page in our relations. We are very strong neighbors with a common history. We’re glad you’re here. I hope that the Prime Minister of Poland (Donald Tusk – ed.) will also find the opportunity to come to Ukraine at the earliest opportunity, Zelensky announced during the meeting.
The interlocutors discussed further cooperation in the defense sphere and the key needs of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. They also discussed the launch of joint production plants and the possibility of purchasing Polish weapons that had proven effectiveness on the battlefield.
The preparation of the next meeting at the level of advisors to state leaders on the implementation of the peace formula and holding a world peace summit was also discussed.
Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported in a post on the X platform (formerly Twitter) that during the conversation with President Zelensky, Sikorski “expressed his strong will to support Ukraine, both economically and militarily, and presented new proposals for bilateral cooperation.”
After meeting with Prime Minister Szmyhal
Sikorski also met in Kiev with the head of the Ukrainian government, Denys Shmyhal. – We are counting on building fruitful and constructive cooperation between our countries – said Szmyhal after the meeting.
The Ukrainian Prime Minister said that he congratulated Sikorski on the new Polish government. He added that during the meeting they discussed strengthening economic cooperation.
– We focused on the key issue: the free movement of cargo across our common border is critically important for Ukraine’s strength and fight against the Russian aggressor. We need to develop a balanced solution that will be beneficial for both countries, the Prime Minister emphasized. He informed that he proposed the introduction of joint control at border crossings, which, as he added, would increase the efficiency of their operation.
They also discussed strengthening cooperation in the production and repair of military equipment. – We have the will and everything needed to take our defense cooperation to a new level, said Shmyhal.
In entries on the X platform, Szmyhal announced that the parties would cooperate closely on matters of European integration. He also thanked Poland for its support from the first days of the war.
Sikorski’s visit to Ukraine is his first trip abroad after taking over as head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In Kiev, Sikorski also met with his Ukrainian counterpart Dmytro Kuleba.
