The recent successes of the Ukrainian Armed Forces near Bakhmut are merely reconnaissance before more serious offensives. Their result may be the encirclement of the entire Russian group fighting in the Bakhmuck-Soledar direction in the Donetsk region, assessed the Ukrainian military expert Roman Svitan.

– Effective offensive operations north and south of Bakhmut are only the prelude to a larger counterattack. Even these limited-scale operations, however, led to the enemy’s escape from previously captured positions, Roman Svitan told the independent Russian channel “Mom Objasnit'” on Telegram.

A Ukrainian expert reported that Russian forces had been driven back from the vicinity of Bohdanivka, a town northwest of Bakhmut, and from Klyshchiivka, south of the city. At the same time, the Ukrainian army attacked Majorsk near Gorłówka and moved 2 kilometers into the Russian-controlled area near Soledar.

Subsequently, it is possible for the Ukrainians to encircle the entire Russian Bachmuck-soledar group, consisting of soldiers of the regular army and mercenaries from the Wagner Group. The task will be easier because the invaders did not erect any fortifications there. The enemy commanders assumed that after taking Bakhmut, they would move further into the territory Ukraine Svitan said.

Well fortified region

In the opinion of an expert Donbass probably will not be the main direction of the announced Ukrainian counteroffensive, because – with the exception of Bakhmut and Soledar – this region is very well fortified and therefore difficult to conduct offensive operations. As Switan explained, the value of a possible operation near Bakhmut lies in the fact that the actions of the Ukrainians will force the enemy to transfer troops from other parts of the front to this section. This, in turn, will enable Kiev to take the initiative and launch effective attacks in other directions.

‘Mom Objasnit’ comments that Svitan’s conclusions are reflected in reports provided by institutions and persons associated with the Kremlin. Friday report from the Ministry of Defence Russia confirmed, albeit indirectly, the defeat of the Russian forces at Bohdanivka, and the owner of the Wagner Group, Yevgeny Prigozhin, assessed that “this is not a regrouping, but an escape”. Sergei Markov, a political scientist associated with the Russian authorities, referred to the events near Soledar, describing them as “dramatic”.

Ukrainians “have not lost a single position”

Earlier on Friday, Ukraine’s Deputy Defense Minister Hanna Malar confirmed that the aggressor’s forces had been forced to withdraw from part of the occupied area in Bakhmut. According to a government representative, the Ukrainian army defending the city has not lost a single position this week and has moved 2 kilometers forward.

Colonel Serhiy Cherevaty, spokesman for the Eastern Grouping of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, spoke in a similar vein, admitting that the Russian troops fighting in Bakhmut are starting to show signs of exhaustion.

The Russian army has been trying to take Bakhmut in the Donetsk region since August 2022. The heaviest and bloodiest fights in the war between Russia and Ukraine are currently being conducted there. Despite forecasts that the command in Kiev may decide to withdraw from the destroyed city, Ukrainian troops continue to defend this town.

According to most Western observers, the aggressor’s forces may currently control about 80-90 percent of Bakhmut’s area. Ukrainian troops are holding positions in the western part of the city.
