The New York Times, citing a high-ranking US administration official, reported that US spy satellites had detected the explosion of the Nowa Kakhovka dam just before it collapsed. Volodymyr Kovalenko, the head of the authorities of Nowa Kakhovka loyal to Kiev, said that the water level in the occupied city had begun to fall. He added that there is still no electricity.

A U.S. official told the New York Times that “the explosion was detected by satellites equipped with infrared sensors that registered a thermal trace indicating an explosion.”

“American analysts still do not know who caused the dam’s destruction or exactly how it happened,” the daily wrote, adding that the main suspect is Russiaalthough there is no “solid” evidence for this so far.

The cited official did not rule out that the high water level in the Kakhovsky Reservoir and previous damage to the dam could have contributed to its collapse, but an explosion – intentional or accidental – “was the probable direct cause.”

According to engineering experts previously quoted by The New York Times, an explosion from within the structure was the most likely cause of the dam’s collapse on Monday night into Tuesday.

Authorities: in Nowa Kachówka, the water level is falling

The head of the Nova Kakhovka authorities loyal to Kiev, Volodymyr Kovalenko, announced on Friday on Radio Svoboda that the water level had started to fall. – As for Nova Kakhovka, the water is receding, it has now remained in the park zone, in the lower part of the city, which was flooded in the first hours and where the largest wave was – up to six meters. This part is still flooded, but there is no residential area there, he said.

He added that the Russian military remained in Nova Kakhovka. “According to eyewitnesses, they occupy empty apartments on Dniprovskaya Avenue,” he said.

According to the mayor of the city, the situation in the village of Korsunka, which is part of Nova Kakhovka, is “much more difficult and more frightening.”

– No one informed the residents that there was a flood. Absolutely no evacuation was organized, and the water level in this village was exactly three meters. The gymnasium, monastery, library, clubhouse were flooded, the cemetery was washed away. People say there are corpses and coffins floating in the streets, Kovalenko said.

According to him, most people left Korsunka on their own, local residents organized themselves and took them in boats. At this moment, according to the mayor, the water in Korsunka began to slowly recede. – Of these three meters, 80 centimeters have already been lost – he emphasized.
