No country has asked Germany for permission to transfer Leopard tanks to Ukraine, a source told Reuters. According to Politico, Chancellor Olaf Scholz set the condition for the Americans that until the US sends its own tanks, Berlin will not agree to re-export. Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki commented on the issue of the German permit. “I’m moderately skeptical, moderately pessimistic, because Germany defends itself against it like the devil defends itself against holy water,” he said.

Because Leopards are manufactured by Germanythe consent of that country to transfer them to another non-member country is crucial FOR THIS. Western allies – who are due to meet at Germany’s Ramstein Air Base on Friday to discuss further military aid to Ukraine – are putting pressure on Berlin to allow such deliveries.

However, Reuters reported on Thursday, citing a source in the German government, that Germany has not yet received a request from any country for permission to re-export these German tanks.

Morawiecki: I am moderately skeptical

The prime minister was asked about the German permit Mateusz Morawiecki during the Q&A session at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. “In recent days, there has been a lot of pressure on Germany to send these modern Leopard tanks to Ukraine,” he said.

– But I am moderately skeptical, moderately pessimistic here, because the Germans defend themselves against holy water, they do not want to send their modern equipment, in particular Leopards – he said.

– On the one hand, I am satisfied that we are pressing the Germans, that certainly not only moral strength, as we feel it, but also the whole world is behind us and everyone agrees with us, even in Davos – he continued.

– I don’t know if the Germans will do it. We will be ready to build a “small coalition” if necessary. With Germany it is a “big coalition”, 100-120 tanks. We are ready to donate 14 tanks to this pool. But 14 tanks will not change anything, Morawiecki assessed.

According to him, “there must be German, Finnish, Danish and French tanks, so Western Europe must now allocate a greater number of modern tanks to Ukraine, so that they can simply defend themselves. increasingly dramatic in Ukraine, he said.

Morawiecki emphasized that he would like “Germany to finally understand that it is necessary to help with all our might to save the freedom, democracy and sovereignty of this great European country.”

Politico: Scholz puts a condition on Americans

Meanwhile, Politico reported that the chancellor Olaf Scholz told US congressmen in Davos on Wednesday that Germany would not agree to transfer Leopard tanks to Ukraine until the US made a decision on sending its own Abrams tanks there. They’ve been in the media before unofficial reports about such a condition of Germany.

According to the portal, which cites three insider sources, Scholz’s conversation with 12 congressmen took place on Wednesday during the annual International Economic Forum. The conversation was meant to be polite in tone, but at the same time show “how far apart Washington and Berlin are on the tank deal.”

According to Politico, politicians were supposed to be surprised by what the chancellor said, because they thought that more progress had been made on the matter.

Earlier on Wednesday, a senior Pentagon official told CNN that he was very optimistic about the prospects for progress on tank deliveries and that the Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin will “pressurize the Germans” to allow the re-export of their Leopards.

US to deliver Abrams

On Thursday, Austin met with the newly appointed head of the German Defense Ministry, Boris Pistorius, and on Friday he will take part in a meeting of ministers of several dozen countries from the Contact Group for the Defense of Ukraine at the Ramstein base in Germany.

The representatives of the Pentagon have not ruled out the transfer of the M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine so far, but pointed to difficulties in providing logistical support for them. Asked about the matter during a visit to Ukraine, the deputy head of the US Department, Colin Kahl, said that “it is not clear if this is the best answer to this challenge”, but noted that the US “will continue to consider what heavy vehicles, including tanks, can be meaningfully transferred Ukraine to get the right number of them on time and to ensure their support.”

Leopard – what is it characterized by

The Leopard 2 is a main battle tank produced by the German concern Krauss-Maffei Wegmann. Its first versions entered the equipment of the German army in 1979-1980. Since then, new versions of the vehicles have been created. Currently, Leopard 2s are used by many European countries, including Germany, Poland, Turkey, Spain, Greece, Denmark and Norway, as well as non-NATO countries – e.g. Sweden, Finland, Austria and Switzerland.

NATO countries have two thousand Leopard 2 tanks, which are considered one of the best in the world, according to data from the London-based International Institute for Strategic Studies.
