Remote weddings during the war

Last March, after Russia launched its military invasion, Ukraine changed the regulations, allowing military personnel staying at the front to conclude remote weddings. The regulations allow e.g. to get married without the direct presence of the soldier. Deputy Minister of Justice Valerija Kolomiyets said then that “the initiative to launch the mechanism of contracting marriages at a distance came from the soldiers.”

– By creating families in the conditions of war, Ukrainians prove to the world that we are a nation that can truly love and appreciate the most important values of life – said Kołomijec, quoted by the UNIAN agency.

War does not interfere with love

Most marriages according to this procedure were registered by registry offices in Kiev, Dnipropetrovsk, Odessa, Lviv, Poltava, Cherkasy and Vinnytsia oblasts.

“War is not an obstacle to love,” Justice Ministry officials wrote, wishing Ukrainians “happiness, love and victory.”

Are there more divorces?

As the Ukrainian Pravda portal reminded, at the beginning of the Russian invasion, psychologists predicted that the separation caused by the forced departure of women and children from Ukraine would lead to an increase in the number of divorces. For now, however, the statistics do not confirm such a tendency. On the contrary, as the portal writes, there were fewer divorces in 2022 than in the previous two years.
