Ukraine. Russia launched an attack on Kiev just hours before the NATO summit in Vilnius

A few hours before the start of the NATO summit in Vilnius, Russia carried out an air attack on Kiev using Iranian Shahed drones, said Serhiy Popko, head of the military administration of the Ukrainian capital. On the night from Monday to Tuesday, anti-aircraft alarms sounded in Kiev and regions in eastern Ukraine.

“The enemy attacked Kiev from the air for the second time this month,” wrote Serhiy Popko on Telegram. “Iranian drones were launched from the south Russiaprobably from Krasnodar Krai,” added the head of the capital’s military administration Ukraine.

According to preliminary information, Ukrainian air defense systems shot down all the drones launched in this attack by Russia. Not on damage or casualty information.

“All detected air targets moving towards Kiev were destroyed by the forces and means of our air defense,” Popko said.

Air-raid alerts were heard in Kiev and regions in eastern Ukraine that lasted more than an hour, the Ukrainian Air Force reported. Explosions resembling the sound of air defense systems were heard in the capital, witnesses quoted by Reuters reported.

NATO Summit in Vilnius

On Tuesday in Vilnius, the NATO summit will begin, which will largely be devoted to the situation in Ukraine. Allies are expected to approve NATO’s first comprehensive defense plan since the end of the Cold War to defend against a potential Russian attack.

A joint press conference of NATO Secretary General and President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky and a meeting of the NATO-Ukraine Council at the level of heads of state are scheduled for Wednesday.

– Even if different positions are presented, it is clear anyway: Ukraine deserves membership in the Alliance. Not now, because now is the war, but we need a clear signal – President Zelensky said in a social media recording. He stressed that the majority of NATO members supported Kiev in this matter and expressed his conviction that Ukraine would become a member of NATO.

Moscow criticized the North Atlantic Alliance and United States for support given to Ukraine and warned that the country’s accession to NATO would be met with a “clear and firm response”.
