The US Justice Department plans to send an “experienced prosecutor” to The Hague as part of its efforts to prosecute war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine, US Attorney General Merrick Garland said.

Garland spoke about these plans after meeting his Ukrainian counterpart Andriy Kostin, who is staying in USA on a working visit.

– To further strengthen our partnership, the Department of Justice will assign an experienced prosecutor to the International Center for the Prosecution of Crimes against Ukrainecreated on the basis of the Joint Investigation Team – said Garland.

He explained that the representative of the US Attorney General’s Office will be based in The Hague, at the European Union Agency for Criminal Justice Cooperation.

The US will also delegate its permanent legal adviser to Kiev

In addition, according to Garland, Washington plans to second its permanent legal counsel to the US embassy in Kiev this summer. His task “will be to work with Ukrainian partners on a whole list of complex issues in the justice sector.”

Garland also said he had spoken with Ukraine’s prosecutor general about further joint efforts to hold the Russian regime accountable for its atrocities. He added that there is also cooperation at the level of the KleptoCapture task force, recently established in the US, which “continues to pursue and seize the assets of sanctioned supporters of the Kremlin and the Russian military.”
