Ukraine’s defense ministry said on Monday that an explosion in the city of Dzhankoy in the occupied Crimea destroyed Russian Kalibr missiles during rail transit, Reuters reported. Kalibr missiles have a range of up to 2,500 kilometers and are designed to be launched from surface warfare assets of the Russian Black Sea Fleet.

Gunshots and several explosions were reported near the city of Dzhankoy in Crimea, where there is also a military airport operated by Russia – reports Euromaidan Press, citing local media. “Russian air defense units shot down a drone,” the statement added.

“Reports of drone attack in Dzhankoy. Russia has turned Dzhankoy into its largest military base in occupied Crimea and uses its military airport extensively,” Ukrainian political scientist Maria Avdeeva wrote on Twitter.

Sergei Aksyonov, the governor of Crimea by delegation from Moscow, said air defense systems were activated and that at least one person was injured after a house and shop in Dzhankoi were damaged.

Kalibr missiles are designed to be launched from surface warfare assets of the Russian Black Sea Fleet. The range of this weapon is over 2,500,000 kilometers for ground targets and over 375 kilometers for sea targets.
