Ukraine, SBU, detention of engineers in Kharkov. They were supposed to cooperate with Rosatom

The Security Service of Ukraine announced the detention in Kharkov of six engineers who allegedly cooperated with the Russian nuclear energy company Rosatom. The Russians “paid for services with cryptocurrency,” the statement added.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) reported that, at the request of a Russian company, the detained engineers “developed research and design documentation for the modernization of Russian nuclear power plants.”

“This concerns mainly the power plants in Kursk, Rostov, Novovoronezh and Balakovo,” the SBU specified.

In occupied territory

According to the SBU, Rosatom representatives planned to involve their people “also in the implementation of technologically advanced work in the temporarily occupied areas in southern Ukraine. The engineers were to, among other things, help the occupiers in the full integration of the Zaporizhia Nuclear Power Plant with the Russian energy system,” it was reported.

Detained “while preparing documentation”

The SBU reported that the perpetrators were detained while preparing design documentation for the Russians, and the main figure in the case is the head of a design company in Kharkov. She added that “for cooperating with the occupiers, those involved received payment in cryptocurrencies from Russia, which first went to fictitious people and later to the designers.”

The detained men face up to 12 years in prison.
