Honored boxing coach Mykhailo Korenovsky is one of the victims of the Russian shelling of a skyscraper in the city of Dnepr, media in Kiev reported, citing reports from the Ukrainian Boxing Federation and the Sports Committee of Ukraine. The athlete orphaned two children. A photo of a yellow kitchen appeared on social media, which, according to Ukrainian media, survived the attack in the destroyed apartment of the Korenowski family. Shortly before the tragedy, the coach and his family celebrated his daughter’s birthday there.

“It is with great regret that we have received terrible news. The body of Mykhailo Korenovsky was recognized among the dead in the Dnieper. Eternal memory for a great coach and good friend. His wife was left with two children without a home and any possessions,” she announced in a Sunday post on Facebook Ukrainian Boxing Federation.


Korenovsky was a distinguished boxing coach and senior coach of the national team of the Dnipropetrovsk region.

Sports Committee Ukraine reported that Korenowski’s wife, just before the Russian attack, went out for a walk with her children. Mykhailo was in the apartment at the time, he was supposed to join the family later.

“There was hope that the coach was alive, that he was still under the rubble. But rescuers found his body,” reported the Sports Committee of Ukraine.

A photo has surfaced on social media showing a kitchen with yellow cabinets that survived the attack, despite one of the walls falling off. According to Tsn.ua, the portal of Ukrainian TV 1+1, the apartment belonged to the athlete.

Tsn.ua wrote that members of Korenovsky’s family published a short video recorded in the same kitchen shortly before the tragedy. It shows the athlete and his wife celebrating their daughter’s birthday.

40 casualties, 75 injured

The rescue operation in Dnipro, a city in the central-eastern part of Ukraine, has been going on since Saturday. Late that afternoon, a Russian Kh-22 anti-ship missile struck a multi-story apartment block, completely destroying one of the building’s verticals.

The head of the territorial defense of the Dnipropetrovsk region, Hennadiy Korban, announced on Monday that the number of people killed in the shelling of the block had increased to 40. Three children were among the dead. Thirty people are still missing. 75 people were injured, including 14 children.
